Notes

1 The Fiscal Year begins on October 1 of the previous year. For example, Fiscal Year 2009 begins on October 1, 2008. For this reason, budget years appear to not correspond with a president's administration. For example, George W. Bush took office in January 2001, but the FY 2001 budget was prepared by the Clinton Administration and authorized by the 106th Congress in 2000.

Prior to fiscal year 1977 the Federal fiscal years began on July 1 and ended on June 30. Cfx alpha 2 0 8 1. For example, John F. Kennedy assumed office on January 20, 1961, but the FY 1961 budget was prepared by the Eisenhower Administration.

In calendar year 1976 the July-September period was a separate accounting period (known as the transition quarter or TQ) to bridge the period required to shift to the new fiscal year.
